Vincent Sherman Smith

Vincent Sherman Smith fought the good fight and finished his course in the early morning hours of October 6, 2021. Vincent was the first child born to the union of Mr. and Mrs. Sherman and Estella Smith on April 6, 1957. Born and raised in Lorain, Ohio, Vincent was a 1975 graduate of Admiral King High School. Making a confession of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ at an early age, Vincent was baptized at Friendship Baptist Church, taught Christian principles through the Sunday School program, and sang in the youth choir. He carried his faith into adulthood and was known to keep gospel music playing most of the time. Vincent began working alongside his father in his mid-teens. He quickly mastered the art of framing, pouring and finishing driveways, pools and many other concrete jobs. By the time he entered his senior year of high school, he was working construction jobs with his father and also employed in the maintenance department at what was then Lorain Community Hospital. He was such a diligent student and worker that his maternal grandmother, the late Hallie Odell Ross, nicknamed Vincent “Hard Rock”. Always reliable, Vincent could be counted on to lend a hand to a friend no matter the personal sacrifice to himself. One of his greatest joys was barbecuing and cooking a lot of food then watching everyone enjoy the feast. No, he wasn’t going to eat much himself, but he was filled up seeing those he loved enjoying themselves. Loving memories will forever be cherished by his mother Mrs. Estella Smith; companion and confidante Remond Thomas; daughters Talona Thomas of Louisville, KY; Tyisha (Travis) Carrie of Cleveland, OH; Aliya and Alexis Rednour of Elyria; brother Ray (Brenda) Smith of Elyria; sisters Brenda (Billy) Martin of San Antonio, TX; Victoria (Anthony) Jones of Chesapeake, VA; Ramona (Demetrius) Robinson of Virginia Beach, VA; and Anita Smith of Lorain; grandsons Taru Lamar Smith Jr.,; Elijah and Isaiah Carrie; granddaughters Taleah Thomas and Avaeah Mack. Vincent was loved by many friends who became family; two of these friends are Michael McAfee and Michael Harris. Vincent was also blessed to enjoy loving relationships with his very large extended family. He is survived by numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Vincent was preceded in death by his son Taru Lamar Smith Sr.; father Sherman Smith Jr.; maternal grandparents Emmett and Hallie Ross and paternal grandmother Lucille McKinnis. A public walk-through viewing will be held Tuesday, October 12, 2021 from 10:30AM until 12:30PM at Brown-Robinson Funeral, 2652 Broadway Ave, Lorain, followed by a 1:00 funeral procession from the funeral home to graveside services and interment at Ridge Hill Memorial Park in Amherst. Social distancing and wearing a mask are required.
