T. Douglas Grayson, affectionately known as “Doug”, of Elyria, passed away on Thursday, November 30th, 2023. He was born on June 24th, 1946, to Thurman Edward and Eugenia Grayson at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Lorain, Ohio.
A loving father, husband, brother and friend, Doug was a kind and gentle soul, whose reach extended beyond those of his immediate circle and community, leaving a legacy of excellence and an indelible impact on those around him, as he was deeply loved and respected by so many.
As an educator, he believed in people, when they didn’t believe in themselves, and always saw the potential and value of every life entrusted to his care, having worked in both the Elyria and Lorain City Schools as a teacher and coach.
As an athlete, he raised the bar and set the standard, garnering many accomplishments during his time as a student at Admiral King High School in Lorain, Ohio, and at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio, most notable of those as an NCAA record holder.
He was preceded in death by his father, Thurman Edward Grayson; mother, Eugenia Grayson-Howard; and wife, MaryAnn Grayson (née Leonard).
He is survived by his immediate family: daughters, Tierney Z. Grayson and Asha M. Grayson; bonus mom, Clivetta Grayson; siblings, Roderick P. (Gaynell) Grayson, Derek L. Grayson, Sandra D. (Rodney) Thomas, Amy K. (Joe) Eisom, Vickie Felder, Marsha Dickerson, Monica Whitehead, Michael Albertha, Nancy Simmons and Montell Albertha; as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
Services will be held on Saturday, December 9, 2023, at Second Baptist Church, 427 Chapman Lane, Elyria, Ohio 44035. A public viewing will be held from 10am until the time of his service at 12 Noon.
