Samuel Conley Gilbert Jr

Samuel Conley Gilbert Jr, 82 years old, of Elyria, passed away November 4, 2023, after a lengthy illness in Avon Oaks Nursing Home.

Samuel was born in Barbourville, KY, July 8, 1941; the second oldest of seven children. He moved to Elyria with his parents shortly after graduating in 1979 from Rosenwald High School in Barbourville. He was very dedicated to his family.

Samuel was an honorary member of "Wind Beneath My Wing Christian Fellowship in Barberton, OH. A very loving and generous person, he took part in activities to help others in need; supplying turkeys for holiday gift baskets of the church and helping whenever needed.

He attended The International Correspondence School in Scranton, PA where he completed the Primary Electrician course. He worked at General Motors-Fisher Body Division, Elyria; Ohio Edison, Elyria, as a Lineman; Novak Electric, Elyria, as a journeyman electrician, prior to starting his own company, Gilcrest Electric and Supply Co. from which he retired December 2015.

He was an avid golfer known to many as "Hammer" by his golfing proteges and won many local golf tournaments. As a member of the Oberlin Golf Club, he traveled all over to play the game!!

Survivors include his wife of 60+ years, Ernestine, son, Nicki, and daughter, Tiffany of Elyria, grandson, Nicholas, granddaughter, Camryn, and great-granddaughters, Lola and Nia, Lorain. Sisters: Valerie Warfield (Jerry), Sandra Gilbert, and Lynn Gilbert, Elyria. Brothers: Anthony Gilbert (Irma), Sacramento, CA, and Michael Gilbert (Nadine), Lorain. Many aunts, cousins, nephews, nieces, and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Mary Gilbert, and a brother, Jerry Gilbert.

He will be truly missed by all. The journey he travels now is a new adventure on a higher plane. Fly high dear brother, fly high!!

A viewing will be held Thursday, Nov. 9, 2023, from 10am until the time of his funeral service at11am at Original Glorious Apostolic Church, 995 Foster Ave, Elyria, OH 44035. The burial will be at Brookdale Cemetery.
