With profound love and gratitude for a life well-lived, we announce the passing of Phyllis J. Russell on April 1, 2025, following a lengthy illness. Born in Lorain, Ohio, on August 20, 1951, and a longtime resident of Elyria, Ohio, Phyllis leaves behind a powerful legacy of faith, family, friendship, and resilience.
Phyllis was the devoted mother of Kellie J. Bowen, who was the heart of her world. She was the proud and loving grandmother of Kameron M. Mincy and Mikaylah P. Mincy, whose presence brought her endless joy. Her love for them was deep, unwavering, and fiercely protective.
She is also survived by her loving siblings: Betty F. Newbold, Diane M. (Michael) Buettner, and Alphonso Harris, Jr., as well as several adoring nieces and nephews. Phyllis leaves to cherish her memory her lifelong friends, Marlene Smith and Cathy Phelps, and a wide circle of family and friends who will forever carry her in their hearts.
She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Alphonso Harris and Ruth Harris-Hall; her sister, Rosalind J. Harris; her nephew, Troy Searight; her niece, Michelle A. Butler; her nephew, Alphonso Harris III; and her aunt, Mary L. DeRamus.
A proud graduate of Lorain High School, Phyllis worked hard and retired from Pactiv Evergreen, formerly known as DairyPak, where she left her mark through her work ethic and kindness. Outside of work, Phyllis was a woman of deep faith and a was a member of Call Out Church of the Almighty God, COGIC, in Elyria, where she worshiped under the leadership of the late Bishop Willie J. Cooper.
Phyllis was known for her warm heart and her bold spirit. She loved her family with all she had - and she wasn’t shy about letting you know it! She found joy in the little things: family gatherings, laughter around the table, and the enjoyment of culinary creations, many of which were provided by her hand. And if you ever needed to know how the Cleveland Browns were doing, just ask Phyllis - she was a die-hard fan, loyal through every touchdown and every turnover. Win or lose, she wore her orange and brown with pride and hope in her heart.
Phyllis lived life on her own terms, and in that same spirit, she requested a private family viewing and wished for her loved ones to celebrate her life in their own unique and special way. Whether through prayer, storytelling, music, or simply quiet reflection, she wanted her life to be remembered with joy, not sorrow.
Phyllis J. Russell was deeply loved and loved deeply. Her presence was a gift, her memory a treasure, and her legacy will continue to inspire all who knew her.
Rest well, Phyllis. You were truly one of a kind - and you’ll always be in our hearts.
