A man well known throughout Lorain and beloved by us all. Marcus Tito Atkinson was born Sept 4th, 1984, in Lorain, Ohio to Rosita Ortiz and Anthony Atkinson Sr.
Despite many physical challenges, he came into the world with a lion’s spirit, thus an adventure ensued.
A proud resident of Lorain, Marcus graduated at the top of his class from Admiral King High School in 2003. Continuing his education at The Ohio State School of Communications, he majored in Journalism and earned a bachelor’s degree in 2007.
Marcus was equal parts historian and statistician. Flanked with facts about modern and local history, he was a huge fan of Cleveland Teams and was a Buckeye to his core. In fact, Marcus was the first person in the family to attend OSU after receiving a full scholarship through the Ohio Young Scholars program.
Professionally, Marcus held multiple roles in media: hosting radio shows, writing newspaper editorials, and eventually starting his own business, 360 Media and Marketing.
Changing career paths and working with NAMI Lorain, Marcus became certified in multiple Peer Recovery programs advocating for those in treatment for Mental Health and Addiction.
His endless passion for service led him to dedicating his time to multiple community organizations including The Hispanic Fund, Lorain Chapter of the NAACP, and the International Peace and Justice Coalition, among others. Truly a steward of his community, he embodied selflessness and strived daily to improve the City of Lorain in numerous ways.
Marcus’ passion for sports rivaled that of his love for community. He spent years coaching and serving as a Board member for youth football with the Lorain Steelman, Raging Raptors, and Raging Titans. He loved to relive his own youth basketball glory days often regaling us with stories, beaming with pride.
Marcus was very adventurous and spent time traveling all over the US. He enjoyed novel experiences, celebrating his cultures, and making new friends.
Ever festive, Marcus loved nothing more than family and holidays! He started celebrating Christmas the day after Halloween and especially enjoyed wrapping gifts for his nieces and nephews. He’s been known to sing Hanukkah songs, too.
Over the years, Marcus spent an abundance of time enjoying poetry, visual arts, and 90’s R&B. A fan of theater, he enjoyed local shows, musical productions, and could often be found performing karaoke anywhere he can find a mic. If you had the chance to witness his rendition of New Edition’s “If It Isn’t Love,” you know it was flawless - choreography and all.
Marcus passed away on Friday, October 27, 2023. Though this is a difficult time for his family, we are proud to have been blessed with his presence and grateful for the time we did share.
Marcus was preceded in death by his Mother, Rosita, Maternal Grandmother, Alejandra, and his beloved Paternal Grandparents, Robert and Margaret.
Marcus is survived by his Fiancé, Mykkayla; his Father, Anthony (“Tony”); Siblings Anthony Jr., Evelisse, Xavier, Vannessa; 11 nieces and nephews; and countless family and friends who adore him.
We invite you to celebrate the amazing life of Marcus Tito Atkinson on Nov 10, 2023. Services will be held at Living Word Church, 2002 E 28th St., Lorain, OH 44055; Viewing at 10am and Funeral at 11am. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Lorain.
