Kelvin Lemond Irby, age 65, received his wings on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, surrounded by his loving family at the Cleveland Clinic. Born on August 2, 1959, to Bobbie McDonald and Emmanuel Irby in Sondheimer, Louisiana, Kelvin embarked on a journey that would leave a lasting legacy in every community he touched.
He moved to Sandusky, Ohio as a child where he became a shining star in the Sandusky Public School System. A decorated athlete, he excelled particularly in wrestling and baseball, proudly earning the title of the 1977 Wrestling State Champion. Kelvin graduated from Sandusky High School in 1977, continuing his standout wrestling career at The Ohio State University where he also pledged and became the proud Solo member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. His remarkable contributions to sports were commemorated when he was inducted into the Sandusky High School Hall of Fame in 1993.
As a devoted father, Kelvin embraced the joy of raising his cherished daughters, Janell and Dania, who were the lights of his life. A true pillar of his community, he founded several impactful organizations and events, including the YMCA Black Achievers, The African American Alternative Center, the 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament, and Rib Burn Off. His unwavering commitment to supporting his community and at-risk youth, particularly young Black males, was the driving force behind his efforts to steer them away from the prison system. Kelvin’s contributions to the community earned him the key to the City of Sandusky and recognition from various outlets including a TV appearance on VH1’s “Good News People”. He worked closely alongside his father, Grady McDonald, offering hope and second chances to those facing life’s challenges, by providing employment and mentorship at McDonald’s Car Wash.
Kelvin took great pride in continuing the family business as the owner of the car wash, embodying the values of hard work and dedication that had been instilled in him by his father. Alongside this, he excelled in other professions, including roles in manufacturing and insurance, all while maintaining a passion for entrepreneurship and community service.
Despite facing numerous medical challenges throughout his life, Kelvin’s indomitable spirit earned him the title of a “walking miracle” by many healthcare professionals. Surviving not just one, but two heart transplants and multiple health diagnoses, he faced each obstacle with remarkable strength and resilience, never uttering a complaint. His love for family was unparalleled; he was not only a devoted son but also the best father, brother, and “paw paw” anyone could ever wish for. Even during his own health battles, he made it a priority to attend family gatherings and milestones, always cheering on his children and grandchildren.
Kelvin leaves behind a legacy of love and compassion, cherished by his mother, Bobbie McDonald; daughters, Janell (Calvin) Thomas and Dania (Gary) Kenty; step-son, Jeremy Newell; sisters, Sandra McDonald and Karen McDonald; and his beloved grandchildren, Garrison Kenty, Graydan Kenty, Gunnar Kenty, Roman Thomas, and special grandson, Teddi Schreck-Newell.
He was preceded in death by his fathers, Grady McDonald and Emmanuel Irby, and his infant brother, Gary L. McDonald.
Kelvin Lemond Irby will always be remembered as a great man who dedicated his life to uplifting others, a remarkable father whose love knew no bounds, and a community leader whose impact will resonate for generations to come.
