Joe Nathan West, a beloved husband, father, brother, and friend to many, passed away on February 29th, 2024, in Lorain Ohio. Born in Bessemer Alabama on August 12th, 1942, Joe's life was filled with love and laughter that touched the hearts of all who knew him.
He is survived by his devoted wife Evangelist Rosa West (McCall) of 46 years; children Andre McCall, Robert Harris, Chantay Bromley, Joe N. West Jr., Adrian West, and Isaac West; sisters Lenore Hicks and Phyllis Agnew; brother Louis Bauzo; 22 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Henton and Elizabeth West; brothers Richard West Sr. and Gordon Steward; sister Katie Mae Spearman (West); sons Terry West and Andre West; daughter Emma Elizebeth West; nephew Richard West Jr.; and cousin James Moore.
Joe served in the Army's First Infantry Division during the Vietnam War where he displayed bravery and courage beyond measure. After returning from service, he held various jobs before finding his passion as a hairstylist. Eventually becoming the proud owner of J and R Trendsetters where he found joy being surrounded by people while nurturing and expanding his business. His zest for life extended beyond work into hobbies such as painting where he captured the beauty of the world through art. As a child, he enjoyed marble competitions which evolved into passionately cheering on his beloved Cleveland sports teams as an adult. Above all else though, Joe cherished time spent with family and friends—their laughter serving as the cornerstone of his happiness. He had an affinity for soulful music with Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" holding a special place in his heart due to its poignant melodies. He also stayed informed about current events through MSNBC while enjoying traveling to explore new cultures and experiences.
A home-going service will be held at Cathedral of Praise, 4545 Elyria Ave, Lorain Ohio on Friday, March 8th, viewing from 10am until time of service at 11am; followed by interment at Ridge Hill Memorial Park Cemetery, to celebrate Joe’s remarkable life—bidding farewell to a cherished friend, family member, and community member.
The loss of Joe West leaves behind an immeasurable void but also countless memories that will continue to bring comfort to those who loved him dearly.
