Joe E. Smith Sr

Joe E. Smith Sr, 76, of Lorain, passed away on Sunday, December 19, 2021 at Avon Towne Center in Avon Lake. Joe was born July 19, 1945, in Charleston, Missouri. His family later moved to the state of Illinois where he graduated from Community High School in Mound City. Following high school, he enlisted into the U.S. Air Force in September 1964, where he served as an auto repairman. He was honorably discharged from the Air Force as a Sergeant in September 1968. After his discharge, he moved to Lorain, Ohio to work as an electrician in the boiler room at U.S. Steel, from where he retired. Joe’s favorite hobby was working on cars. He loved tinkering with anything and everything. He also enjoyed sports, fishing, watching movies, taking walks through the woods, and spending time with family and friends. He was a member of Point of Grace Ministries in Elyria. Joe is survived by 4 children, Keba Smith (Carlos Chavis) of Lorain, Joe (Peggy) Smith Jr. of Lorain, Catrice Smith of Avon and Nayna Smith of Lorain; 13 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren; and a sister, Dorothy Nicholson of Carbondale, IL. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Edgar and Ora Smith; 4 brothers, Raymond Smith, Edgar Smith Jr., William Smith, and George Smith; 6 sisters, Verbe Harris, Helen Curry, Vernell Richardson, Glenda Blakemore, Lavera Mitchell, and Annie Pearl Gardener. A viewing will be held Wednesday, December 29, from 10AM until the time of service at 11AM at Living Word Church, 2002 E. 28th St., Lorain. Burial will be at Ridge Hill Memorial Park in Amherst. Social distancing and wearing a mask are required.
