Frederick Albert 'Al' Alexander

Frederick Albert “Al” Alexander was born on November 25, 1932, in Sandusky, on the Southside, “236 S. Depot St.,” he so proudly recalled every time he was asked. He passed away peacefully on March 13, 2025, at the age of 92. He was the seventh son of eight born to James and Rebecca (Connors) Alexander.

Al attended and graduated from Sandusky High School June 1952 and left shortly after enlisting in the US Air Force for four years and honorably discharged as an Airman First Class, for which he received the Certificate Of Honor. He was a ready and willing helper, very respectable, and was quick to extend a hand, addressing any man as “Sir.”

Al retired from Sandusky Ford Motor Plant after 40 years of service in October 1996. He was a member of UAW Local 1216 and worked several other jobs while laid off during his tenure at Ford. In his early years, Al attended furniture making school in New York.

He enjoyed refinishing and reupholstering old furniture that his wife, Mevelyn, collected. His meticulous ability to do so warded him an invitation from his instructor to stay and work with him. He was a young family man at the time, so he opted to go home and get a more steady, dependable job, Ford. He was known for being a true family man of great integrity, well-respected, and was said by his older sister Ida to be a “very proper man.” He truly believed in taking care of business.

On November 11, 1990, he was led to give his life to the Lord by “the girl next door” (literally) and was baptized in Jesus name at the Emmanuel Temple Church. Al later married Mevelyn O. Matthews on May 25, 1991. At Emmanuel, he served as faithful usher, was ordained a Deacon in 1996 and was awarded the Eagle Award (the church’s highest honor), but almost refused, thinking he wasn’t qualified, nor a builder/carpenter like some of the others. He was an avid member of Brotherhood Auxiliary, the men’s choir, and a member of the “Great Warriors” (Senior citizens auxiliary) of Emmanuel being honored again in 2012. In May 2011, he and his wife relocated to Marietta, Ga. There, they became members of Highpoint Christian Tabernacle Church. Al joined the Greeter’s Auxiliary, became a member of the Pearls of Essence (Senior citizens auxiliary), honorary of the Brotherhood Auxiliary. In 2024, he was made Deacon Emeritus, by Pastor Thomas H. Vinson.

Al is beloved by his large illustrious family. He is survived by a wife of 33 years, Mevelyn O. Alexander; children: Pamela (John) Pickens, Sandusky, Mark Alexander, Fremont, Lisa Alexander, Julie Alexander, and Laurie Alexander, all of Sandusky, Nubiyn Mzekewe, Atlanta, Ga., Katrice L. Mines, Phillip D. (Yolanda) Mines, and Milton G. Mines, III, all of Marietta, Ga.; 19 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren; one brother, Louis Alexander, Sandusky; a host loving nieces, nephews, in-laws, cousins, special friends, and church family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; eldest daughter, Gayle Pickens; six brothers: Shields, James, Jr., Willis, Gospie, Frank, and William; four sisters: Grace Crooks, Ida Alexander, Margerie Green, and Gladys Prophet.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 22, 2025, from 10AM until the time of service at 11AM at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 1215 Pierce Street, Sandusky, Ohio 44870. Burial will be at Perkins Township Cemetery.
