Dorothy Lee McElroy-Brown, 95, of Lorain, transitioned on Thursday, September 12, 2024. She was born in Elyria, Ohio on March 21, 1929. She graduated from Elyria High School in 1949 and received her honorary high school diploma in 2019.
Dorothy was a member of Friendship Baptist Church in Lorain, where her father Earnest McElroy was one of the original founding members. She was a member for over 50 years and was the musician for the Friendship Baptist Male Chorus, Senior Choir, and Gospel Chorus. She also played the piano for Greater St. Mathew AME Church for over 10 years.
She worked for the family of Dr. Asunción and Dr. Reyes for over 30 years and worked for the Department of Job and Family Services for over 10 years. She was a member of the Friendly Promoter Booster Club. She also received The Silver Fox Award in 2017 from The National Council of Negro Women.
Dorothy leaves to cherish her memory her son, John Brown; grandchildren, LaQueta Brown, Marvin Hall, Demoyne Kimbrough, John O Brown, Jason Brown, and Jayla Brown; great-grandchildren, Aa’Shanti Atwood, JaeLynn Brown, and Jai’den Brown; great-great grandchildren, Noh’Va Young and Nhi’Mila Young; foster sisters, Sherry Hairston and Dora Lawhorn; special friends Linda Jeffries and Charlene Jeans; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Ola McElroy (McCray); her foster parents, William and Mattie Givens; her son, Marvin Prince Bailey; her sisters, Patricia Ann, Billy Mae, and Lola Bee; and foster sister, Rosie.
Visitation will be held Thursday, September 26, 2024, from 11 AM until the time of service at Noon at Friendship Baptist Church, 2160 Reeves Ave, Lorain OH 44052, where Pastor John Jackson will officiate. Interment will be at Elmwood Cemetery, Lorain.
