Clyde Edward Jackson Sr

Clyde Edward Jackson, Sr. entered into rest on Tuesday, February 1, 2022, at Mercy Health New Life Hospice after a brief illness. He was born February 25, 1922 in Maybeury, W.Va.

Clyde attended schools in McDowell County. He married Mary V. Lane and they had three daughters and a son. In Maybeury he was a member of Mount Mariah Baptist Church and was very active in the church and the community.

He worked as a coal miner in W.VA. When the mines closed in 1953, he moved to Ohio. He worked at National Tube Works/U.S.S. Steel until 1958 when he started work at Ford Motor Company Lorain Assembly Plant. Clyde retired from Ford in December 1984.

While at Ford, he was involved with the union working with the Community Services Good and Welfare Committees. He coordinated all strike functions and co-chaired both the United Way and Blood drives. Clyde received Ford’s top award, the Ford Town Crier’s Bell. After retirement, he continued to serve as chaplain for UAW Local 425 and the retiree chapter.

Clyde has served on the Board of Directors of United Way; Mental Health and Mental Retardation 648 Board, Rehabilitation Center of Lorain County; Community Foundation of Greater Lorain County; Red Cross; and Lorain Community Hospital. The Lorain NAACP honored him with the Frederick Douglass award.

When he came to Lorain in 1953, he and has family joined Mount Zion Baptist Church. He served as a deacon and became supervisor of the Junior Church. Besides working in other departments of the church, he was chairman of the Progressive Baptist Association of Laymen and was once vice president of the National Baptist Laymen for the National Baptist Convention. He was also director of the National Junior Laymen and served as an instructor for classes of the National Laymen.

Clyde loved people and enjoyed his family and sports. He promoted education for everyone and through the scholarship fund that was established by his family, he has been able to assist many high school graduates of Mount Zion during their college years.

Clyde will be sadly missed by his daughters, Sandra Scott, Bettye Sutton and Susan Church of Lorain; 8 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren and a host of family and friends.

Clyde was preceded by his wife, Mary Jackson; son Clyde Edward Jackson, Jr., mother, Annie L. Jackson; sister Dorothy Chinn; brother Leroy Jackson Sr.; son-in-law Stanley Sutton.

A viewing will be held Tuesday, February 8, 2022, from 9AM until time of services at 11AM at Mount Zion Baptist Church, 1516 East 30th St., Lorain OH 44055. Burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery, Lorain.
