In Her Own Words!
We pain in the transition, but we rejoice in her destination, she took her infinite journey to her forever home!
Our loved one was born in Obion, Tennessee to Andrew and Rhugin Fortune. She came to Elyria, Ohio in 1938 at the age of two where she resided till the time of her homegoing. She graduated from Elyria High School in 1953 and was united in marriage that same year to Robert Newton.
She leaves these love ones to cherish and honor her memory, her daughters, Robin Newton Wright, Cheryl (Christopher) Barbee, Bridget Newton; sons, Gregory Newton, Steven (Adrienne) Newton, Robert (June) Newton, Kevin (Lori) Newton and Andrew (Cynthia) Newton; and sister, Eleanor Lynch; many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren, whom she loved and enjoyed; special nephew, Michael Fortune; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
She follows those who went before her: husband, Robert Newton; father, Andrew Fortune; mother, Rhugin Fortune; sisters, Eunice Jean Fortune and Armenia Marie Washington; granddaughters, Courtney Barbee and Qiana Newton; and niece, Lucinda Lynch.
She accepted Christ at the age of eleven and served the Lord until her homegoing. She served as a Youth Sunday School teacher, and usher at the Woodford Ave. Church of God in Christ. She served as President and Lead Usher at the Second Calvary Church and as President of the Hospitality Committee for 26 years.
She served as Treasurer for the Mission and Outreach Ministry for 27 years, being faithful to the cause. She loved the Lord and faithfully attended her worship service, with A New and Living Way Ministries, and served as the church Mother of that congregation.
Her first ministry was her family, to which she unconditionally devoted her life. She taught her children about Christ and the love of God and spoke of His saving grace at every opportunity. She will always be remembered for how she would gather her children together and read the Bible to them. And during thunderstorms she would turn off the lights and read to them by flashlight. She would always say, “Be quiet God is talking”.
She loved the outdoors, in the Spring and Summer, you could always find her outside planting flowers and enjoying the beauty of God's creation. She had a great wit about her which she often used, sparing no one.
Her presence, laughter and wisdom will be greatly missed by all who truly loved her, those who called her Mom!
Her sun has set, but her light still shines!
“May the work I’ve done and lives I’ve touched speak for me!”
