Annie Mae Lindsey (Castile) Wright

Annie Mae Lindsey (Castile) Wright, 95, gained her wings and went to live with the Lord on Saturday, March 8, 2025, in Firelands Hospital surrounded by her family and other loved ones.

Annie was born on October 16, 1929, in Cuba, Alabama to her parents Thornton Castile and Pearlie Gardner-Castile. She was the youngest child, with several older brothers, and was affectionately called “Sister”.

In her early years she attended school in Cuba, Alabama and Kingston High School in Laurel, MS until she quit at an early age to work and help her family to make ends meet when her brothers had left home for the Armed Forces.

She met and married Hilman Lindsey, Sr. who promised to give her a better life in Ohio, where they were hiring black men to work high paying factory jobs. They moved their two young boys, Robert and Hilman, to Sandusky in the 1940’s for that better life. Later, they were blessed with the addition of a daughter, named Beverly, and two more sons, Wilbert and Kelvin.

Annie worked various jobs at Philco Company, Scott Paper, Foster Grant, New Departure, and General Motors where she worked for over 20 years until her retirement. She was a faithful member of New Jerusalem Baptist Church, and former member of Second Baptist Church for many years.

Annie was known for her loving kindness towards everyone. She never met a stranger, and you became part of the family when you entered her door. You were welcomed and never left hungry, matter of fact, you left with plates of leftovers and probably even cans or jars from the pantry and meat from the freezer. She always had words of wisdom for the young people, especially the girls. She loved to cook and was well known for her chicken dressing, double crust sweet potato cobbler and oatmeal pies. She was known as the “Southside Mother” by so many.

Annie is survived by sons: Hilman (Myrdis) Lindsey, Woodmere, OH., and Kelvin (Barbara) Lindsey, Columbus, OH., a daughter, Beverly (Willie Ray) Roberts, Sandusky, OH., a stepson, Anthony Wright, Sandusky, adopted sons to the family, Donnie Davis, Steve Scales, Reggie Scales, Scott Green and Joe Bob Pickens, nephews that were more like her sons: Artie Castile, Sandusky, and Gregory (Carolyn) Collins, Bear, Delaware, niece/daughter, Gloria (Rob) Garr, very devoted family/friends, Mike Cline and Mary Bond, Seville, OH. and a cousin more like sister, Sadie Mae Williams, Cuba, Alabama. She was blessed with a GREAT caretaker, Regina Patton. Annie also leaves 16 grandchildren and numerous great grands, and other relatives. She was definitely the Matriarch of the Castile Family and has left a lengthy legacy behind her.

Annie was preceded in death by her parents, Thornton and Pearlie, husbands, Hilman Lindsey, Sr. and Thomas Wright, sons: Robert (Rocket) Lindsey and Wilbert Lindsey, brothers: R. T. (Corrine) Castile, Robert (Catherine) Collins, and Sam Collins, cousins/brothers James (Alberta) Castile and John (Bessie) Castile, and a grandson Kerel Gray, and a great grandchild Johnny DeSean Smith, Jr.

Visitation will be held Friday, March 14, 2025, from 10:30AM until time of services at 11:00AM at New Jerusalem Baptist Church, 1920 Eddy Henry Way in Sandusky, where Rev. Curtis Johnson Jr., Pastor, is officiating.
